Android M the upcoming version of Android by Google is available as developer preview for Nexus 5. If you’re the proud owner who have already flashed the developer preview image on your Nexus 5. You definitely be checking all the new feature and settings on your device. Enhanced battery life (Doze), new launcher, new permission settings and there are some other feature which users must check out once the Android M is available for all the device.
Once you checked all the new feature you might be looking for different ways to root your phone. Even if you look for the latest version of SuperSU, you will notice that the developer hasn’t updated it for Android (6.0) M. Now the question come in mind i.e. Is there any way that can root your Nexus 5 running on Android M developer preview? And answer is Yes! Currently SuperSU doesn’t support Android M by default and that let XDA recognized developer DespairFactor to create the first Android M kernel for Nexus 5 called Despair Kernel. What he did is make little changes in the core code of the kernel and allow SuperSU to work due it which root access become possible on Nexus 5 running on Android M.
Things to Keep in Mind
If you want to root your Nexus 5 you must have:
- Latest version of Despair kernel,
- SuperSU V2.49
- Device must have latest Android M (MPZ44Q build)
- Custom Recovery like TWRP
Download Required Files
- Recovery: TWRP recovery
- SuperSU: BETA-SuperSU-v2.49.zip
- Despair Kernel: Despair.M.HH.R1.5.zip
Steps to Root Nexus 5 running on Android M Developer Preview:
1. First of all you need to install the TWRP custom recovery. If you want you can try other recoveries, but this one is more reliable. Once its install, then head over to next step.
2. Now you need to download both SuperSU and Despair Kernel from the Download required file section mentioned above.
3. After the transfer both the files to your Nexus 5 storage.
4. Now you need to turn off the phone and Press and hold the power button, volume up and down keys at the same time to reboot your device into fastboot mode. Here you need to press the volume buttons to highlight the recovery options and press the power button to select and in few seconds you will go into recovery mode.
5. You just need to flash Despair Kernel and for that just go to install and select the Despair.M.HH.R1.5.zip file.
6. Once done go back and perform the same thing with SuperSU file.
7. Once you have flashed both the files, you need to reboot your device. And after this boot you will left with rooted Nexus 5 running on Android M developer preview. You can download the root check application from the play store to confirm the root.
